Installing the Skid Plate
Installing the Skid Plate The skid plate mounting bracket was installed with the crash bars because they share a common clamp. See the skid plate bracket mounting setup in prior pictures. The skid plate mounts with 4 - M8 screws in the mounting bracket and 2 - M8 screws into the U shaped spring nuts on either side of the oil filter. Note that these threaded spring nuts have small spacers that are captured within the rubber grommets. These will fall out when you remove the skid plate when you change your oil.
Installing the Skid Plate You have to keep the 2 - M8 x 50 socket head cap screws and 20mm spacers from falling out of the skid plate until you can get the screws started. Note I put Locktite on the bolts.
Installing the Skid Plate I used some small O rings that were tight around the M8 screws to hold the screws from falling out of the holes until I got them started.
Installing the Skid Plate I brought the skid plate up to the bike with a small floor jack. You can see the bolts and the spring nuts through the slots in the skid plate. I lined up the bolts and nuts and started screwing them in with a 6mm hex key. Leave them loose for now.
Installing the Skid Plate Put Locktite on the 4 - M8 flat head screws.. These screws use a 5mm hex wrench.
Installing the Skid Plate Line the skid plate holes up with the threaded holes in the bracket with a punch. Screw the flat heads in with a 5mm hex wrench. Once the first one is in the rest will be easy.
Installing the Skid Plate Get all 4 screws started.
Installing the Skid Plate I ran them in with a power impact.
Installing the Skid Plate I tightened them with the 5mm hex key. You can torque these to 7..4 ft lbs (10nm). Go back and torque the 2 40mm M8 in front to 11 ft. lbs (15nm).
