Remove the Right Side Cowl In this case I had to remove the right side crash bars.
Outside Air Temp Sensor (OAT) The back of the Outside Air Temperature sensor.
Air Hole in the Tank Front Cover my first experiment The tank front cover that's in front of the sensor is pulled away showing the sensor and the screw holding it in place. This is from the inside of the cowling.
Hole in the Tank Front Cover my first experiment Air can get to the sensor.
Remove the Front Side Plate Instead of going through removing the cowl I can get to the air sensor and it's plug from the side. Just remove 3 - 3mm screws.
Removing the Sensor The sensor is held in with a phillips head screw. You have to cut the plastic away from the outside in order to get a screw driver on it. I think this is ABS plastic. I used a Dremel 561 1/8" cutting bit..
Removing the Sensor After cutting the plastic away I was able to get a screwdriver on the sensor mounting screw.
Pull the Sensor out The harness connector for the sensor is directly behind where the sensor was pulled out.
The Sensor Fits into a Housing Pop the clip open where the wire goes into the assembly you can see that there is a protective housing around the actual sensor. The foam is glued to a 2 wire Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) device that reads 4.1 to 5.9k ohms
Sensor Housing Removed With the housing removed you can slip the sensor through tight spaces.
Preliminary Test I decided to test this location because it wasn't near the radiator or inside the cowl. I went out for a ride and it worked well.
Add 12" to the Sensor Wire I cut the sensor off about 1-1/2" from the end and soldered 12" of wire to the ends. There's no polarity to this sensor. Both wires are the same.
Add 12" to the Sensor Wire I used shrink tubing to insulate the joints.
Add 12" to the Sensor Wire Splicing the other end of the extension wires to the wires coming from the bike's harness.
Add 12" to the Sensor Wire Shrinking the tubing with a heat gun.
Pull the Sensor out the Hole I pulled the sensor through the hole I already had in the inner shroud.
Pull about 8" of the line through the hole in the shroud
The Sensor From the Front My Altrider Upper crash bars provided a nice flat surface under the headlight to mount the sensor. I put the plastic sensor housing back on to protect the sensor. Took the bike out for a ride and the sensor works great.
